It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyer. I am of no exception. As we refer to the movie “Jane Eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally.

Jane Eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt，the only relative she had，treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach Jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything else.As a reward of revolting the ruthless oppression, Jane got a chance to be a tutor in Thornfield Garden. There she made the acquaintance of lovely Adele and that garden’s owner, Rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. Jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: After Jane and Rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact Rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following Rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----Rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. Jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn’t want to betray her own principles, because she was Jane Eyer. The film has finally got a symbolist end: Jane inherited a large number of legacies and finally returned. After finding Rochester’s misfortune brought by his original mad wife, Jane chose to stay with him forever.

I don’t know what others feel, but frankly speaking, I would rather regard the section that Jane began her teaching job in Thornfield as the film’s end----especially when I heard Jane’s words “Never in my life have I been awaken so happily.” For one thing, this ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what Jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; for another, this should be what the audiences with my views hoped her to get. But the professional judgment of producing films reminded me to wait for a totally different result: There must be something wrong coming with the excellence----perhaps not only should another section be added to enrich the story, but also we may see from the next transition of Jane’s life that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.” (By Forrest Gump’s mother, in the film “Forrest Gump”)

The border town is such a tragedy of love and purity, which is permeated with light sadness and deep poetry, and a tragedy of human nature.

The book I read this week entittled the Red and the Black, which is undoubtedly among the best liturature works. As a person who haven’t had much knowledge in literature, any comments on this work seem to be rather naive and even sort of reckless. But this is the only book I have access to recently. With much deliberation, I would like to write down following words.

The book mainly tells a story about a man named Julien, who came from a carpenter’s family and got a shrewd father and two elder brothers characterized by huge size and rudeness. Though he wasn’t quite athletic, he got talent with his memory. He could recite the whole contents of the Bible, which made him admired by people around him and win him a job as a family teacher. And this is the part where our story begins. Under his gorgeous face, there exists a relentless lust for fortune, power and status, all of which derive from his persuit of happiness, dignity and freedom and finally contributed to his downfall. He worshiped Nepolen the most, and he is willing to die a thousand times to win his success. He desires for love, yet sometimes he used it as a tool to obtain his status and power. However, he had never given up showing his sympathy for the poor and contempt to the Noble. His pureness blended together with ambition and felt self-abased and conceited at the same time. As a young man, he ignored what’s really important for him—being loved. And he just realized this until death was around the corner. The story is a tragedy, for he hasn’t got what he wanted in the end and he sacrificed too much for his contemporary fame and fortune. At the last few hours of his life, those happy times he spent with his loved ones gave him courage to face death penalty with calm . when he realized that he didn’t have to tolerate the world filled with fakeness or put a mask on his face, he died with ease.

Julien stands for the group of people coming from the low class in the society and hope to achieve success with their own efforts. These people usually don’t have the necessary conditions to become successful, but they will by no means stop trying or let God tells them what their lives should be like, instead, they are willing to sacrifice anything to realize their dreams and earn their dignity. For these people, no matter what the consequences their struggle may be, I should forever pay my tribute to them. To some extent, they are the makers of the world.

While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodneeventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

I spent ten days reading it.   It is said that David Copperfield is one of the most famous masterpieces of Charles Dickens . Dickens once said: “among all my works, David Copperfield was my favorite.” The main character David Copperfield’s father died before he was born. He had a happy childhood before his ninth birthday. When he was eight, he was warmly invited to Pigsty’s house. There, he spent a free holiday and made some new friends. Actually, it was his last happy time in his childhood. When he returned home, he found that his life had completely changed. His mother had been married to Mr.Murdstone, a stern man with the coldest heart in the world. He didn’t like David at all and poor David was forced to be sent to a worst boarding school.，where students were treated violently. He had to work in the laboratory of his stepfather when he was only ten years old! His work there was dirty, tiring and boring .When David’s weak mother finally left him, he felt as if he had been an orphan in the world . He disagreed that Catherine played with Heathcliff. At last, Catherine married Edgar Linton because Edgar was rich, and she would be the most important woman for miles around. The main reason was that she can help Heathcliff with her husband ‘money. Hindley had made Heathcliff become a poor, dull farm worker. So Heathcliff hated Earnshaws , and Lintons . In 1787, Heathcliff had changed. He wore a confident, intelligent expression on his face, and his manner was no longer rough. The farm boy had become a gentleman. He had worked all his life to destroy these two families, the Earnshaws and the Lintons. He had got their money and their land. But he had lost Catherine. For something his whole body and heart and brain had wanted for so long! It’s a long fight! He wished it were finished! In 1802, Mr Heathcliff was there in bed, lying on his back. His eyes were so eagerly and fiercely, and he seemed to be smiling! He was dead! The three gravestones close to the moor Catherine’s, the middle one, is old one. On one side is Edgar Linton’s, and on the other is Heathcliff’s new one. Hindley’s son, Hareton and Catherine and Edgar’s daughter, Cathy got married. They were living happily.  The main reason for making the lover separate from is their selves .They are proud, selfish. They can’t decide their lives. As a result, love usually fails because of these reasons. In a word, I hope that everyone doesn’t start to cherish something until you have lost it. Please cherish what you have now. That’s my thought about Wuthering Heights. It’s really a good book. The story is wonderful, and the structure is also extremely excellent. The author Emily Bronte uses a series of flashbacks and time shifts draws a powerful picture of this story. Because of its wonderful story, excellent structure and graceful language, the book left a deep impression on me. I’d like to recommend it to other readers. I have never been to Troy， but David Maule made me feel as if I were standing on the high wall of Troy， watching the fierce war。 Thanks to this British author， who adapted the famous Homer’s poem into a lively story， I found it easier to understand this story。

Though the story happened over 3000 years ago in a remote place， I was deeply fascinated by it。 The mysterious plot is one of the reasons why I loved The Story of Troy so much， yet I am more interested in the human heroes of the war。

Hector was the eldest son of king of Troy， Priam。 He was not only a real hero of Trojan， but was regarded the highest moral hero in Greek classic by later historians。

The war started because of the mischief of his brother， Paris， whom he didn’t appreciate。 However， since Hector was the mander of the Trojan army， he was obliged to fight with all force。 It was really a tragedy that such a valiant man died in the duel with another great warrior， Achilles。

It is natural to see death in a war。 As a famous Chinese parable says， “A life can be as slight as a piece of feather， or as weighty as Mount Tai。” Sometimes， one’s glory walks hand in hand with one’s doom。 Achilles was such a typical person。 His personal charm made The Story of Troy more attractive。

He was so crucial because his every appearance in a war encouraged his fellow soldiers and terrified the enemies。 Actually， Achilles was half-god who was almost invincible in people’s mind。 That’s why his name was memorized long after his death。

Besides the two great men， the wisdom of Odysseus also proved him to be a great hero。 He didn’t want to attend the war because he was happily married and had a lovely son。 However， since his country was allied to Mycenae， he had to take the mand given by the king of Mycenae。

I’m quite sure that the story of the wooden horse is widely known， however， few people know who thought of the brilliant idea， that’s why I admired Odysseus so much because he was the person who got the idea。 Thanks to the horse， the ten-year war came to an end at last。 If you want to know how the wooden horse worked， just read the book。

The ancient Greeks believed that the gods and goddesses also played important roles in the origin， process and ending of the whole story。

The story of the golden apple was such an example。

When Eris， the goddess of argument and disagreement， threw out the golden apple to a wedding ceremony on Mount Olympus， a dispute happened。 Hera， the queen of gods， Athena， the goddess of wisdom， and Aphrodite， the goddess of love and beauty， were all involved in the argument for the apple。

None of them was willing to give way， so they turned to Paris for a final judgment。 Tempted by Aphrodite’s beauty and promise， Paris handed the apple to her。 To keep her word， Aphrodite helped him to get Helen， the most beautiful woman in the world， as his wife。 That was the cause of the war。

Paris’s choice obviously annoyed the other two goddesses。 So during the war， they helped the Greek alliance army while some other gods， such as Apollo and Aphrodite， guarded Troy。

When Paris dueled with Helen’s former husband Menelaus， Aphrodite saved Paris when he was about to be finished off。

After the duel between those two people， there was a truce between the Greek alliance and Troy。 However， both Hera and Athena were not happy to see it。

Hera pursued her husband ZEUS:“ Now， will you send Athena to make the Troyjans break the peace?”(Page 22) Then with Zeus’s permission， Athena went down to start the war again and finally she brought the Greeks to success。

From the whole story， we can see that in ancient Greeks’ view， gods sometimes played a much more important role in their life。 However， with the rapid development of science， we have learned that the Greek gods never existed。 This is why a recent movie of Troy has not mentioned a single god。

Everything happened due to men’s ambition， love， loyalty or jealousy。 With those emotion and people’s effort， we human beings can acplish wonders and be master of the world。

God are of less importance than they used to be。 Nonetheless， the gods and goddesses made The Story of Troy more mysterious and marvelous。

I have learnt from the book more than the wonderful story of history， love and war。 I believe that human can determine their destiny by their own。 I highly remend this book to my friends with the same interest。

《三国演义》英文读后感

Recently I have read a famous Chinese classical novel-The romance of the Three Kingdoms and I felt benefit a lot。 Let me tell you about my feelings。

The romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the four great Chinese master pieces。 It was written by Luo Guanzhong， who was born in 1330。 It describes nearly 200 characters and tells the story from the late Eastern Han dynasty to the unified of Jin dynasty。

The minute I started to read this book， I was deeply impressed by the sentence at the beginning of the novel: ”The empire， long divided， must unite; long united， must divide。“ It is so philosophical。 It reflected the main history of the Three Kingdoms， from the rebellion of the Yellow Turbans to the replacement of the division of the country into Three Kingdoms (Wei， Shu and Wu) by the Jin Dynasty。 In these periods， it showed a lot of heroic deeds， and what the heroes did had made a brilliant history。 In this novel， the hero I admire mostly is Guan Yu， the general of Shu。

”A man of enormous height， nine spans tall， with a two-foot-long beard flowing from his rich， ruddy cheeks。 He had glistening lips， eyes sweeping sharply back like those of the crimson-faced phoenix， and brows like nestling silkworms。 His stature was imposing， his bearing awesome。“ This is Guan Yu's appearance。 He was called as hero not only because of his handsome looking， but because of his precious characters。

He is the embodiment of loyalty， wisdom and bravery。 Once， when Guan Yu was having a battle with Cao Cao (the Master of Wei)， he lost connection with Liu Bei(the Master of Shu)， and finally he had to surrender because Liu Bei's family was with him。 Cao Cao appreciated Guan Yu's talents， he provided a fabulous palace and lots of money to Guan Yu。 Despite Guan Yu was taken good care of in the Cao Cao’s camp， but his heart was still with the Liu Bei’s camp。 He had never given up looking for his master。 As soon as he got the news of Liu Bei， Guan Yu had forced five passes and slew six captains， finally he found his master。 His behavior showed not only his loyalty to his master but also his bravery。

Admittedly， Guan Yu's death is also a lamentable。 Because of his placency， he looked down on the army of Wu， lost Jingzhou (an important City)， finally， he flopped， and was killed by his personal enemy。

With his personal likes and dislikes， regardless of the consequences， it led to the disruption of the alliance between Wu and Shu， the whole situation was changed greatly。

Guan Yu’s lesson tells us: No matter how talented you are， you’d better remain modest and be humble。

This is a great novel that depicts the countless legendary stories。 We can learn not only the characters of the heroes， but also the political and military strategies。 It is a best way to experience the profound Chinese ancient culture。

Written in the first chapter of the book Pride and Prejudice is an extraordinary sentence of which even a person who has had only a brief look upon the book will not fail to receive a deep impression-It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife。 In terms of Sherlock Holmes， we’d better alter the sentence into “It is a fact universally accepted by readers throughout the world that an excellent book in possession of our famous detective Sherlock Holmes is undoubtedly a masterpiece of all times。” Perhaps this is one of the most obvious explanations for the unrivaled popularity of “Holmes series” in the field of detective stories。 Overwhelmed by the remendations provided by my friends， I decided to take a look on this Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son originally published by Oxford University Press。

As a whole， this book is about a case concerning the Duke’s missing son。 Arthur， the Duke’s son， was found out in a certain morning to have disappeared， acpanied with which was also the disappearance of the German teacher。 The school master Dr。 Huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time Sherlock Holmes for help。 Realizing how tough and important the case is， Holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed Dr。 Huxtable back to Mackleton by train。 Having formed a rough idea about the whole matter， Holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival， during the process of which he discovered the body of the German teacher Heidegger。 Finally， primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective， he managed to unravel the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the Duke。

Having once started reading this fiction， I was pletely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book。 As the saying goes， “Well begun， half done”。 At the beginning of the story， just like many other detective stories， the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client。 However， unlike other ones， this story first delineates the client’s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it。 As is known to all， vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure’s characteristics and visualize the scenes， thus making the story more authentic and attractive。 Therefore， trying to present a “real world” to his readership， Sir Arthur Conan Doyle， author of the original “Holmes series”， has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of Dr。 Watson， a character not so specialized in discovering the truth

n behind the enigmatic happenings as Holmes but so loyal to Sherlock Homes as a friend that he always acpanies Holmes wherever he goes。 In this way， he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book， Apart from the special start， the ending of the whole story， being dramatic but reasonable， is certainly an outstanding one。 After all， except the author himself， who knows that the Duke’s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the Duke’s bastard? In addition， who knows that the Duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before Holmes solves this plicated problem? Yet， surprising as it is， this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well。 While enjoying this wonderful story， I could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author’s gorgeous writing skill。 Closing my eyes， I can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film。 Not until then did I understand why the Japanese carto

Before I read this book, I had watched a cartoon movie made by Japan. So I have a strong interest on it.

It all begins in the dead of winter; The Christmas Season. The coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. While her husband is off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy.

On Christmas Eve, Marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls' father. The all gather together around the fire to read the letter. Afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. Marmee kisses them and they are off to bed.

Jo is longing to become a writer. So, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. As morning comes she is the last one awake. The table is set, and food prepared for their Christmas feast.

As dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out Jo's play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. As they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window.

The 2 oldest girls: Jo and Meg, get ready to attend the Christmas Ball. While Jo is curling Meg's hair, there is a strange smell to the air. Amy screams, Megs hair is being singed. They continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves.

One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. One question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by Alcott. If they aren't, what are Alcott's views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story?

It is interesting to examine the last half of Chapter 20, ”Confidential.“ Jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with Marmee of the situation between Meg and Mr. Brooke. The possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. Jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. Jo cannot understand why Meg would want to stop behaving ”like a sensible creature“ (p.202)， and refers to love as ”such nonsense."

the family of gentleman in the countryside is jane austen’s favourite topic. but this little topic can reflect big problems. it concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in britain in her century. you can find these from the very beginning of this book.

the first sentence in this book is impressive. it reads: “it is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”. the undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.

people always think that austen was an expert at telling love stories. in fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. after reading this book, i know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.

i couldn’t forget how eager mrs. bennet wants to marry off her daughters. if you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, i must mention the situation in britain at that time. only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. jane austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.

in “pride and prejudice”, the sister of mr. bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying jane because the bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. from this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. the society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.

in modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. a lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. marry for money is still a big problem in our society. we can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?

austen left this problem for us to think. the genius of jane austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. although austen was only 21 when she wrote “pride and prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. the plots in her works are always very natural. the development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. i think the depth of pride and prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.
