江生不能应答，十分惭愧就回来了，对他的朋友说：“我背弃了先祖的告诫，不能深藏在海上，在酒席之间漫游流览，又没有美好的德行，显扬的名声只有腥臭之气，理应被合氏子排斥，而府州的长官贬低我。原本就应该跟从你游荡在水下，如果不能实现自己的志愿，即使是牺牲性命又有什么遗憾呢？我要离开你了。”不久果然如此。此后他的族人再次盛行于四明，然而声誉逐步降低了。

太史公说：“民间谚语‘瓜果失去土地就不繁茂，鱼龙离开水就不神异。’事物原本尚且这样，人也会有这样的情况。啊，瑶柱确实是有才德的士人。当他成为宴席上的珍品，风采味道盛美，即使是珍奇的美味也有比不上的。一旦不在恰当的时候出现从而丧失他的本真，一般人就会捂着鼻子经过他面前，有见识的士大夫也会替他品鉴并且将他置于下等之列，读书人进退不可不慎重啊，令人哀痛啊！”
