My name is Jacob Cramer. I am a freshman at Orange High School.

In 2013, I founded an organization called Love For The Elderly. Many elderly people have no one to care for them, no one to look after them, and no one to love them. The elderly have paved the pathway of success for my generation. They deserve to be shown appreciation and kindness but are often ignored.

I am sure all of you have someone in your heart who has been at a nursing home. Think of them while I say this: they deserve the best and nothing but the best. The elderly are such an outstanding group, and their wisdom can most definitely be learned from. This idea of appreciating the elderly reverberated (回响) inside my head until finally, I decided it was time to step up and make a difference.

My passion for writing led me to create an organization, where people from all across the globe send letters filled with kindness and joy, from Iceland, Romania, Finland, Australia, and more. I then send these letters to senior centers, nursing homes, and retirement communities located all across the country. To this date, I have collected over 1,000 letters, and the response I have received has been truly unbelievable.

This past month, I had the opportunity to receive $100 from KindSpring through their monthly kindness contest to help my organization. This money has been of great help. We do not receive much money, and so it helped to pay for many costs, including postage and envelopes. This gesture of kindness has been very beneficial to my organization, and I could not be more appreciative. Thank you so much to KindSpring for this amazing opportunity. If any of you would like to get involved in my organization, please visit lovefortheelderly.org.

24. What does the author tell us about the elderly?

A. All are in bad condition. B. Most get little love or care.

C. A few live a successful life. D. They appreciate others’ kindness.

25. Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Outgoing and honest. B. Aggressive but careful.

C. Kind and ambitious. D. Considerate but silent.

26. Why does the author mention KindSpring?

A. To advertise for the organization.

B. To appeal to others to donate money.

C. To show mean behaviors of the organization.

D. To express his thanks to the organization.

27. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

A. Volunteer in Senior Centers — Your Choice

B. Love for the Elderly — a Chance to Show Kindness

C. Stay Alone after Retirement — the Elderly’s Suffering

D. Letters to Parents — the Way of Expressing Love

Architects have long turned to the past for inspiration. In this age of concrete and steel, however, they’re more likely to look for aesthetic (美学的) influence than technical know-how. But an ancient Chinese construction technique called dougong is a remarkable exception.

Consisting of a series of wooden brackets (支架) with no nails or fasteners, it’s over 2,500 years old and commonly found in Chinese architecture, such as Beijing’s Forbidden City. Many structures built during the Tang and Song dynasties featured “curtain walls” which were non-load-bearing. As a result, the unsupported wood shouldering the weight might break. Designers needed a technique which would more evenly spread the burden across their structures. Their solution was dougong.

Engineering has come a long way since the ancient Chinese building technique was in fashion. But there’s a timeless quality to it. Modern-day designers in many areas are adopting it to produce amazing and stable work of architecture. Among them is Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who used dougong-inspired methods for his recent buildings: Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum and Café Kureon, a 2,120-square-foot restaurant.

For architect Terrence Curry, the attraction of using ancient methods is about finding something that can “speak to Chinese identity”. His structure Dougong Cube, now part of the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University in Beijing, was constructed using classical-style brackets and over 2,000 boards. “It has fundamental structures of dougong, but we just aren’t using it in the way it was intended to be used. We’re really pulling it out — emphasizing its beauty and complexity, and the way it works,” said Curry. “The shape and function of dougong is directly related to properties of wood, and the ability of people who make these buildings. In this way, there’s little need for decoration because the structure and design give it its distinctive look.”

28. Why is dougong considered an exception?

A. It has existed for a very long time.

B. It keeps stable with no concrete or steel.

C. It was ignored by architects in the past.

D. It meets both structural and decorative needs.

29. What was the function of dougong in ancient times?

A. To beautify the structures. B. To avoid nails and fasteners.

C. To distribute weight of buildings. D. To replace unstable curtain walls.

30. What does the author want to show by mentioning Kengo Kuma’s buildings?

A. Dougong holds lasting appeal. B. Dougong makes for great buildings.

C. Dougong deserves wide recognition. D. Dougong plays a big role in engineering.

31. What can be learned about Dougong Cube?

A. It aims to explore Chinese identity.

B. It’s more complex than common structures.

C. It reproduces traditional use of dougong.

D. It’s a combination of tradition and innovation.

For everyone who hates setting their alarm an hour earlier to hit the gym, scientists may have some good news.

Afternoon workouts lead to better outcomes for some people, according to a study published this year. The study, which looked at men who are at risk for or have Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病), found that participants who exercised in the afternoon experienced more metabolic (新陈代谢的) benefits as well as more positive effects on their exercise performance and fat mass, compared to participants who exercised in the morning.

“Our body has a biological clock, and this regulates many processes in the body and these processes have a rhythm,” said Patrick Schrauwen, a professor of metabolic aspects of Type 2 diabetes at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

“Some of these are well known, like your body temperature and your blood pressure,” Schrauwen said. “Our biological clocks also influence our metabolism and whether our bodies burn fat or carbohydrates (碳水化合物) at certain times,” he added. And for study participants who were fat or at risk for Type 2 diabetes, those fat-burning processes were more efficient in the afternoon hours. Higher body temperatures in the afternoon may also help improve corporal performance, almost like a built-in daily warm-up.

“When you start to realize how strong this biological clock can be, and then if you do the things like food intake on the wrong time of the day, or being active on the wrong time of the day, or being inactive at times when you should be active, this can have a major influence,” Schrauwen added. “The good news is that you can also use it for your benefit.”

It can be especially helpful for competitive athletes or people training for a race to exercise in the afternoon of a day. For example, Schrauwen said he worked with a football team that was able to improve their performance by moving practice to the afternoon.

32. What is the good news mentioned in the text?

A. People do not need to set their alarm earlier any more.

B. Exercise in the afternoon is good for all human beings.

C. The men with Type 2 diabetes can be treated by exercising in the afternoon.

D. Some people get more benefits when they exercise in the afternoon.

33. What is the scientific basis of Patrick Schrauwen’s study?

A. Our bodies have a regular system.

B. Our bodies can adjust to a new habit.

C. The patients with diabetes burn fat faster.

D. People can do warm-up inside their bodies.

34. What does the underlined word “corporal” mean in paragraph 4?

A. Memorial. B. Physical. C. Natural. D. Mental.

35. How did Schrauwen prove his research?

A. By working with other scientists.

B. By comparing the results from different people.

C. By trying it with specific groups.

D. By helping participants at risk for diabetes.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Emotional regulation (情绪管理) is taking any action that changes the intensity of an emotional experience. 36 . It refers to the ability to effectively control our emotions through various approaches. We are expected to manage our emotions in ways that are socially acceptable. There are a number of skills that can help us self-regulate our emotions.

37

Emotions happen fast. We don’t think “now I will be angry” — we just suddenly have fires in our eyes and become extremely angry. So the number one skill in regulating difficult emotions is to pause. Take a breath. Slow down the moment between trigger (触发) and response.

Noticing what you feel

An equally important skill involves the ability to become aware of what you’re feeling. Dr. Judson Brewer, MD Ph.D. recommends practices for becoming more curious about your own physical reactions. In what parts of your body are you noticing feelings? Is your stomach upset? Is your heart racing? 38 . Looking into what is happening to you physically can also draw away your focus and reduce the intensity of the emotion.

Naming what you feel

After noticing what you feel, the ability to name it can help you get control of what is happening. Ask yourself: What would you call the emotions you’re feeling? Is it anger, sadness, or disappointment? 39 .

Accepting the emotion

40 . Rather than beating yourself up for feeling angry or scared, recognize that your emotional reactions are acceptable. Try to practice self-sympathy and give yourself respect. Recognize that experiencing emotions is a normal human reaction.

A. Creating space

B. Predicting what you feel

C. It doesn’t mean preventing or avoiding emotions

D. Emotions come and go so that you barely notice them

E. Identifying emotions will help you share your feelings with others

F. Emotions are a normal and natural part of how we respond to situations

G. Your physical reactions can reflect what you are experiencing emotionally

A study trip to the countryside

第二节 (满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A sign on the cardboard read: “BROKE — NEED DOG FOOD.” A desperate young man held the sign in one hand and beside him were lying two dogs, an older one and a puppy no more than a year old on the busy corner in downtown Las Vegas.

Forgetting about my own destination, I quickly turned the car around and went straight back toward the homeless. For years, I’ve kept dog and cat food in the trunk of my car for the stray (走失的) or hungry animals I find. Helping needy animals has always been an automatic decision for me. I pulled into the nearest parking lot and grabbed a five-pound bag of dog food, a container of water, and a twenty-dollar bill from my purse. I approached the ragged-looking man.

“Hi,” I offered as I drew nearer. The young man’s face was gentle and friendly, and I could sense just by looking in his eyes that he was someone in real crisis.

“I have some food here for your dogs,” I said. Touched and surprised, he took the bag as I set down the water in front of them. He told me he is Wayne.

“What happened, Wayne?” I asked. I felt a bit intrusive (侵扰的), but he told me the whole story of him. He repeated several times that he didn’t intend to sell his dogs.

Seeing people beg for food isn’t anything new in this city. But this man stood out because he wasn’t asking for food for himself. He was more concerned with keeping his dogs fed than with his own well-being. As a pet-parent of nine well-fed and passionately loved dogs of my own, it hit a deep chord (弦) in me.

I felt I should give them a hand. Some daily essentials would cover a week or more, during which time he might find a temporary job to feed himself and the dogs. With the thought, I asked him if he’d wait there for a few minutes until I returned. He nodded his head and smiled.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第一节 应用文

参考范文:

A study trip to the countryside

Last Saturday, our school organized a study trip. About 500 students, accompanied by our teachers, participated in the activity.

We took tour buses to the destination, Fuxing Village. In the morning, we visited a well-preserved ancient architectural complex, which attracted tens of thousands of visitors. We also took a walk around the villagers’ living areas. In the afternoon, we went sightseeing to the green corridor of the village. It was there that we learned about modern agriculture, for which villagers get rich day by day.

The tour helps me feel the great changes of the countryside and the greatness of our country. I love the lively countryside and I do hope I can join the forces of rural construction one day.

第二节 读后续写

参考范文:

Paragraph 1:

My car flew to the nearest grocery store. Bursting with urgency, I raced in and took hold of a cart. I started on the first aisle and didn’t quit until I reached the other side of the store. The items couldn’t be pulled off the shelves fast enough. Just the essentials, I thought. Just food that would last a couple of weeks and sustain their miserable existence. Peanut butter, bread, dog food, and chew toys. They should have some treats, too. A few other necessities, and finally the job was done.

Paragraph 2:

I hurried back to offer all these groceries to him. The icing on the cake was the look on Wayne’s face when he saw all the groceries. “Here are just a few things,” I said. To avoid any awkwardness, I held out my hand to pet the dogs. “Thank you. Now I won’t have to sell my dogs.” His smile shone brightly in the deepening darkness. It’s true that people are more complex than animals, but sometimes they can be easy to read. Wayne is a good person — from how he treated his dogs, I knew.

听力材料

Text 1

W: I’m late for work and my car isn’t working, so I need to find someone to take me to work.

M: I can take you.

Text 2

W: I went to a really cool museum with my class yesterday.

M: Really? You mean the Nature Museum?

W: No, it was the Science Museum, and there was a show of robots. We were supposed to go to the Art Museum, but that got canceled so we did this instead.

Text 3

W: I just came to pick up my plastic container that I lent you the other day.

M: Oh, right. Well, I’ve just washed it actually, so here you go.

Text 4

W: John, can you do me a favor in the kitchen?

M: At your service.

W: I would like half of the chicken cut into slices, and the other half kept. Remember to cut off the fat. Your father doesn’t like the taste.

Text 5

W: Hey, Rex, how are you at cooking? Are you any good?

M: Not really if I’m honest.

Text 6

M: What did you do on the weekend, Amy?

W: Let me think. Oh, I went shopping on Friday evening and bought some daily necessities for the apartment.

M: What did you get?

W: Oh, some towels and a new toothbrush. Saturday wasn’t too bad. I went jogging in the morning and went to the gym in the afternoon. But after all that exercise, I was too tired to do anything on Saturday night.

M: So how about Sunday?

W: It was great! I went out on a date with a really great man that night.

Text 7

W: Slow down, Adam. You’re driving like a mad man.

M: I told Greta I’d pick her up at 9:45. Her plane lands at 9:20.

W: Relax. It’s just 9 o’clock now. There’s plenty of time.

M: I suppose so.

W: Did you have breakfast yet?

M: No. I jumped out of bed this morning and ran out of the front door. I didn’t have time to eat.

W: I’ve got an apple in my bag, if you want it.

M: Have you got anything else?

W: Pens, pencils, a notebook…but nothing to eat. Just the apple, I’m afraid.

M: I’ll pick something up at the airport.

W: Are you crazy? Food’s always ten times more expensive at the airport.

Text 8

W: How on earth did you fall out of the window?

M: I was sitting with my mother in the living room playing with my toys. My sister started crying in the bedroom, and my mom went to take care of her. So I pushed a chair near a window and climbed on top to have a look outside. And while I was standing by the window, my biscuit fell out of my mouth. I tried to catch it, but I lost my balance and fell.

W: Oh, my goodness! Do you remember the fall?

M: It was all very quick, but I remember lying on the ground with people all around me. And then I saw my mom. She was hopeless, because she thought my head hurt, but all I had was a broken leg. I was very lucky.

W: Surely you’re a lucky boy. Be more careful next time.

Text 9

W: Can I help you?

M: Yes, my son and daughter bought this pen here for my wife’s birthday, but it doesn’t work, so I’d like to exchange it.

W: Let me see. Was it dropped or anything?

M: No, but you can see that the point is bent a little bit.

W: Yes, it is, isn’t it? We’d be happy to exchange it for you. But I’m afraid we don’t have another purple one. We only have this pen in black or yellow now.

M: My wife doesn’t really care for either of those colors.

W: We have one with a red leather cover. That’s three dollars more.

M: The children worked hard to save up the eleven dollars for this one. They would probably be upset if I paid for part of their present.

W: If you want, we can order another pen just like this one.

M: That sounds like a good idea. Would you please go ahead and do that?

W: We’d be very happy to. It will take a week or ten days. We’ll call you when it comes in.

M: Thank you very much.

Text 10

M: May I have your attention, please? Today, I would like to share with you one of my experiences. It happened to me a few years ago. That day after lunch I was on my way to school hurriedly because I was afraid that I would be late. Suddenly I hit against an old man carelessly and the books and papers in my hand dropped onto the ground. It was I that hit against him but I scolded the old man rudely. The man just smiled at me and helped me pick up all the books and papers on the ground. After that he turned round and went away. When I got to my classroom, our class teacher told us that a new teacher would replace him and the new teacher would arrive soon. To my surprise, I found that the new teacher was the man I had run into on my way to school. I believed he would have a rather poor opinion of me but he treated me the same as other students. From my story I learned a lesson that I should be polite to a stranger at any time.
