二、阅读理解(15*2=30points)

Passage 1

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes a person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is the intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental(done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, the children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

Parents should also be careful about what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive(helpful)things to their children, such as “ that was a very clever thing you did or you are such a smart child.”

What do you think? Are people born intelligent or do they become intelligent with the help of good parents and teachers?

11.The answers to the questions concerning intelligence are ______.

A.quite sure B.not definite C. not reasonable D. very obvious

12.Which of the following is probably the main factor to decide children’s intelligence?

13.According to the passage, a dull and unintelligent child ______.

A.Has few friends B. seldom talks to his parents C. is often neglected D. is often neglected by his teachers.

14.Why should parents be careful about what they say?

A.Because words speak louder than actions

B.Children like to listen to words.

C.Their words have a great influence on children

D. Children understand everything by listening to their parents

15.The word “smart” has all of the following meanings except ______.

A.fashionable B. bright C. wise D. clever

Passage 2

In some ways the employment interview is like a persuasive speech because the applicant seeks to persuade the employer to employ him ore her.

A job applicant has the responsibility for ascertaining(确定)certain types of information prior to the interview. First, the applicant knows what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant be able to state his reasons for wishing to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible concerning the company. Relevant information for the applicant to locate includes such items as the location of the home and regional offices, the financial status of the company, plans for expansion, and company philosophy, information about most major corporations available in reference books and periodicals(期刊).

After gathering information concerning the company, the applicant is ready for the interview. The interviewer's first impression comes from the interviewee's appearance. For most interviews, appropriate dress for men is a conservative dark colored suit with a long sleeve white or light blue shirt. For women a conservative, tailored suit or dress is appropriate. Both men and women should have neat, conservative length of hair.

Although hairstyle and dress are matters of taste, many personnel directors form initial impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man’s long hair, sloppy dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.

D.The possibility of getting a promotion

18. Before the interview, the applicant should obtain information concerning________

A. His career objectives

B. Most major corporations

C. The letters of regional offices

D. The company he applies to

19. the author suggests that the interviewee should wear______

Passage 3

It’s quite a challenge to turn finals week into something good. With a little planning it can at least be turned into something manageable.

Spend a few minutes in writing down everything you need to do in your calendar. Time has a tendency to slip away during final week, so plan and keep track of it the best you can. Don’t let weeks of hard work go to waste because you didn’t budget your time well during the last week of the semester.

Be realistic when it comes to planning your schedule. Give time to sleep, get some exercise, eat well, and just hang out. Your brain needs a break from all the studying, so let it relax by hanging out with friends, surfing the internet, or just mentally checking out for a while.

Treat your body kindly during finals week, and it will return the favor. You should get enough sleep so that you can be mentally sharp both during your study sessions and during your exams themselves. Make sure you feel at your physical best if you hope to perform at your mental best.

Talk to your teacher Carson and have them go over the material you are studying or any other material you want to do well on during finals.

If you and Carson's dorm is too noisy, head to the library---taking advantage of your college library doesn’t make you a bookworm.

七、简答题(5*2=10points)

Finding a good work-at-home job is not easy. Although you see all the online advertising, there aren’t that many of them. Those that are available may require that you live in a certain area or spend at least some time in the office. Others may be only part-time jobs.

Keep in mind that the skills needed for home employment are similar to those needed for working in an office. You’ll also need a home office with a high speed internet connection, phone, fax, computer, printer, and other basic office equipment.

To get started, consider your job search as your job. Spend as many hours per week on your job search as you would spend working. If you’re looking for full-time work, you should be spending full-time hours seeking a job.

Networking(人际联系) remains the top way to find a job and it does work. Develop contacts---friends, family, even the other job seekers---anyone who might have the information you need. You can take a direct approach and ask for job information or try a less formal approach and ask for information and advice. Contact everyone you know and tell them you want to work from home. You may be surprised by the people they know and the job information they can provide.

60.Why is it difficult to find good work-at-home-jobs?

Because they may require that you live in ________________________________.

61.Besides the skills for home employment, what else do you need?

You also need__________________________________.

62.How much time should you spend searching for a full-time job?

You should spend ______________________________.

63.What’s the best way to find a work-at-home job?

The best way is ________________________.

64.What’s the passage mainly about?
