Public opinionsare being misled by their claim that recoiling from globalization seems to bethe panacea to the two most urgent problems troubling many people in thewest—employment and refugees. But can we buy the story?

Withdrawing from TPP seems to be an act that can move factories back fromthird world countries so that new jobs can be created and therefore unemploymentrate reduced. However, the cost of the products would also be raised since thelabor at home and the transport of raw materials are more expensive, whichcauses greater pressure on all the families in terms of household expenditure.People may manage to get new jobs but the living standard does not improve. Andthis is the story that anti-globalization politicians would never tell to thevoters.

In addition to the concern of employment, the influx of refugees alsotouches a highly sensitive nerve. Rejecting asylum seekers may promote domesticsecurity in the short run, but it tramples what’s equallyimportant--humanitarianism and responsibilities. Refugees such as those fromSyria are not born refugees; they are made refugees by the Wars that shatteredtheir homes and countries. The real solution therefore is not isolation butglobalization because globalization promotes interdependence among nationswhereby conflicts and wars are more likely to be prevented.

Yes, there are defects in globalization, such as environmentaldeterioration, polarization between the rich and the poor, and exploitation ofworkers, to name just a few. But what we need to do is not putting an end to itbut putting it right. As the second largest economy of the world, China shouldhold a lead. We should promote global governance fight against contamination. Weshould strike a balance between efficiency and equity so that differentcountries, different social classes and different groups of people can all enjoythe benefits of globalization.

When I was little, I lived in a remote village in southern China with mygrandparents. Every Chinese New Year Eve, mygrandmother would prepare our festive food called Guo. It was a tradition thatneighbors help each other prepare Guo. While adults were busy pouring flour onthe cutting board, pressing the paste flat and moulding it into beautiful shape,kids would run around in the village’s ancestral temple and immerse ourselves inthe enchanting and cheerful smell of holiday.

Having lived in the city for the following ten years, I always feel thechanges happening in my hometown every time I go back--the village lookssurprisingly similar to the coastal city where I live! The opening field where Ibaked potatoes was leveled and a manufacturing factory has been built there,blocking the sunlight of our yard. The ancestral temple has been torn down andis now a small supermarket for villagers. The number of people knowing how toprepare Guo is diminishing and young people seem to be more interested in fastfood and oblivious of traditional arts and skills. The village seems quite emptybecause most young people have become migrant workers in cities and only returnhome once or twice a year.

In the course of urbanization, villages gradually languish and die out whenthe passing on of traditions lose its population base. The total number ofChinese villages has declined from 3.7 million in 20__ to 2.6 million in 20__.Approximately 300 villages in China are disappearing every day. It’s saddeningto see that many ancient villages, which survived warfare and natural disastersover thousands of years, have been demolished or annexed by cities in peacetime.Lulei Village, hometown for the famous mathematician, Chen Jingrun, was anaffluent village in southern China with a history of over 700 years. Since thevillage obstructed the construction of the local railway station, it was almosttorn down, including the former residence for Chen’s family.

We Chinese have been reveling in urbanization for decades. What worries meis that one day on this way to modernization, we turn back but are unable to seethe link with our origins and ancestors. When we’re surrounded by skyscrapersand neon glamour, what defines us as Chinese? Urbanization does not meanbrutally encroaching upon the countryside and strangling rural culture. Itshould not sever the ties with our beloved homeland. While promoting thecountry’s economy, it should also allow space for cultural diversity. In theideal urbanization process, we should no longer emphasize the binary oppositionof city and village, but endeavor to form a reciprocal relationship between thetwo.

Ladies and gentlemen, fallen leaves return to the roots. If we do notredefine and reorient urbanization, we will not be able to save millions ofvillages, neither can we revert to the origin where we belong.

These were some of the chart-toppers announced on the radio while I was atthe barbershop a year ago. Quite depressing, huh.

I asked my brother, Joe, why songs that display such unhappiness reach thecharts. Joe is an established businessman who is always confident with hisviewpoints. He reacted quickly and questioned me in a matter-of-fact tone,“can’t you relate to the song?” He then confidently pointed to the Buddhists’explanation of happiness, explaining to me that happiness is never a constantstate, but rather only a temporary escape from suffering. While I respect theBuddhist explanation, I couldn’t help but ask: so what is keeping you fromexperiencing happiness? Joe lost his assertiveness when I mentioned this and hereplied, “While I gain acceptance from my peers and family, I feel like I’m anobody. These songs act as a route for me to escape. I don’t see happiness asattainable in my life.”

While Joe transformed from a confident speaker to a soft-spoken melancholicwithin a matter of a minute, my barber offered him a sympathetic smile. He spokeup. “I was exactly like you - once upon a time, I deceived myself into thinkingI was happy. I followed the majority’s norms of a stable job in brokerage andfelt I gained society’s acceptance. I was loved! But deep down, I loved songslike these because I felt so useless. I felt that whatever I did made nodifference in the world. I found an escape from this mainstream music as a meansof explaining myself. Then the next day, I’d put on my suit and be a nobodyagain.

Then I asked, but how about now? “Now?” The barber said, smiling. “Now, Idon’t think this music deserves its place on the charts.” He flipped over to hisplaylist and played us a song - “Mayfly” by Cheer Chen.

The lyrics goes “Everyday when we open our eyes, we are all mayflies.Living a simple life, chasing a dream vigorously, searching for nothing buthappiness.”

“I think this music deserves a place on the charts. I wish people couldsearch for happiness by only looking forward, and be brave enough neglect harshcriticisms and mockeries along the way - just like a mayfly. A mayfly only seeswhat is ahead of it - why else would their lives be so simple otherwise? Ibecame a barber because I wanted to attain happiness - sure, I experienceddisapproval from peers and such, but I did not want to become “a firefly withoutlight”. I find happiness when I mix with trendy young people that are eager tomake their customers look better - sure, some may not understand why this bringsme happiness, but does it matter?”

My brother Joe and I had a long conversation that evening. We debatedvigorously on our different values of happiness - while the conversation withthe barber relit my childhood dream of being a conductor, Joe still questionswhether stable happiness can achieved even if his dreams are fulfilled. Butultimately, we agreed that one should not let others decide your own standard ofhappiness. Don’t deceive yourself into sadness and despair; pick yourself up andfind your own definition of happiness. Thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. My topic today is “The pursuit ofhappiness” and am I going to start with a definition? NO! That is not how I amgoing to approach this. After knowing the topic, I can imagine students cuttingdirectly into the definiton of happiness, sharing their little happy stories,setting criteria for happiness and using puns to show what happiness consistsof. But that is not where I am going.

To be honest, there is actually not much to talk about happiness and thereis no need to hold an open discussion about it, because the sense of happinessis a mere personal and private concept. We define our own happiness. Some peoplelike peace and nature, so they prefer to live tranquilly in the countryside;some people are drawn into arts and literature, so they become wild and letimagination take their wheels; while some others are simply fancy about thebetterment of life, in other words, to make big money, so they work their assesoff to get to the top of the pyramid, like me. Am I happy? Yes. Are they happy?Of course. People have different beliefs, different targets and they are simplydifferent beings and they deserve the rights to pursue their own happiness.

However, there is a popular set-pattern catching on recently, claiming tobe the happiest way of living and it goes like, “Enter a key school! Then apretigious university! Get a decent job! Large houses! Stunning spouse!Children! And finally rest in peace with four generation crying and rememberingyou besides your coffin.” And the pattern passes on to the next generation.There are actually a lot more set-patterns and stereotypes in our lives: “Boysgo for science; girls are for arts.” “English major? You’ve gotta learn a doubledegree. Economy will be the best for boys.” “Don’t ever listen to Lady Gaga,that’s for women and gays.” And whenever I want to fight against thosestereotypes, the responses will all be like, “That’s how it works in China! Be aman! You are too naive [Sigh], you’ve gotta learn the systems, boy.” Theseemingly-established patterns are dangerous. They make us lose our ability tothink and analyse, or become too realistic to think: if we make one step out ofthe set-circle, we will be outcasted and no longer experience happiness. Butthat is not true. I became an art student in a class of only 5 boys; I broke thefirst pattern. I didn’t apply for the economy degree, because I hate math; Ibroke the second pattern. I am sure there will be many more patterns for me tobreak, but I am not afraid; a little excited actually. If I followed any ofthose patterns, I swear, I couldn’t be happy like I am now.

I don’t want to live like a bee flying in circles: “Get the honey! Get backto the hive and get ready to die!” No. Even though I can’t make big money in thefuture, I still want things to be in my way, not from the pattern. I want tolive my life, not a life. I can only be happy if I can be true to myself.

Fifteen years ago, English majors took only courses in language and literature. Today, we also study Western culture, journalism, business communications, international relations, and computer science.

The emergence of choices marks the beginning of a new era in China's history; an era of diversity, of material and cultural richness, and an era of the rebirth of the Chinese nation. We enjoy the abundance of choice. But this has not come easily.

About 150 years ago, China was forced to open up its door by Western canons and gunboats. It has been through the struggle and sacrifice of generations that we finally have gained the opportunity to choose for ourselves. The policy of reform and openness is the choice that has made all the difference.

Like others of my age, I'm too young to have experienced the time when the Chinese people had no right to choose. However, as the next century draws near, it is time to ask: What does choice really mean to us young people?

Is choice a game that relies on chance or luck? Is choice an empty promise that never materializes? Or is choice a puzzle so difficult that we have to avoid it?

First, I would like to say: To choose means to claim opportunities.

I am a third-year English major. An important choice for me, of course, is what to do upon graduation. I can go to graduate school, at home or abroad. I can go to work as a teacher, a translator, a journalist, an editor and a diplomat. Actually, the system of mutual selection has allowed me to approach almost every career opportunity in China.

Indeed, this is not going to be an easy choice. I would love to work in such big cities as Beijing or Shanghai or Shenzhen. I would also love to return to my hometown, which is intimate, though slightly lagging in development. I would love to stay in the coastal area where life is exciting and fast-paced. Fifteen years ago, the knowledge of a foreign language or of computer operation was considered merely an advantage. But today, with wider educational opportunities, this same knowledge has become essential to everyone.

Given this situation, even our smallest choices will require great wisdom and personal determination.

Some people like peace and nature, so they prefer to live tranquilly in the countryside; some people are drawn into arts and literature, so they become wild and let imagination take their wheels; while some others are simply fancy about the betterment of life, in other words, to make big money, so they work their asses off to get to the top of the pyramid, like me. Am I happy? Yes. Are they happy? Of course. People have different beliefs, different targets and they are simply different beings and they deserve the rights to pursue their own happiness.

However, there is a popular set-pattern catching on recently, claiming to be the happiest way of living and it goes like, “Enter a key school! Then a pretigious university! Get a decent job! Large houses! Stunning spouse! Children! And finally rest in peace with four generation crying and remembering you besides your coffin.” And the pattern passes on to the next generation. There are actually a lot more set-patterns and stereotypes in our lives: “Boys go for science; girls are for arts.” “English major? You’ve gotta learn a double degree. Economy will be the best for boys.” “Don’t ever listen to Lady Gaga, that’s for women and gays.” And whenever I want to fight against those stereotypes, the responses will all be like, “That’s how it works in China! Be a man! You are too naive [Sigh], you’ve gotta learn the systems, boy.” The seemingly-established patterns are dangerous. They make us lose our ability to think and analyse, or become too realistic to think: if we make one step out of the set-circle, we will be outcasted and no longer experience happiness. But that is not true. I became an art student in a class of only 5 boys; I broke the first pattern. I didn’t apply for the economy degree, because I hate math; I broke the second pattern. I am sure there will be many more patterns for me to break, but I am not afraid; a little excited actually. If I followed any of those patterns, I swear, I couldn’t be happy like I am now.

I don’t want to live like a bee flying in circles: “Get the honey! Get back to the hive and get ready to die!” No. Even though I can’t make big money in the future, I still want things to be in my way, not from the pattern. I want to live my life, not a life. I can only be happy if I can be true to myself.

psychologist tell us that stress is a state of worry caused by the problem of living , such as too much work or study , heavy responsibilities , and quickened pace of life .

statistics show that stress comes from every detail in our life . financial problems , poor health , being laid off may be the stress that most adults now suffering . as students in the university , we are also under our special stress . while study , having to take various tests and submit a project against a deadline may put a great pressure on us . and the things make us felt stressed may be our parents’s greater expectations on us than we could reach . later , when we are likely to graduate , some other problems will also annoy us . i think we will worry a lot about our ability to compete in the job market and how we can best use what we’ve learned at college in our future job .

the chief problem we should face to is our atitude towards stress .people usually say they can not live in the sun except they escape from stress . it’s unwelcome ! yes , however , very necessary . just image a world where stress does not exist and people lead their life in a very comfortable way . but is this kind of living condition as perfect as we hope ? without stress , they may feel very satisfied with the current life but lack of power to discover new things result in nothing except a countermarch of the society . no stress , no development . so a certain amount of stress is good . it can stimulate us and increase our level of alertness .

and our answer to stress is another vital problem . how to do with ourselves when stress suddenly break into our life ? to wave the white flag and admit our unability , to give up to our ideality , or worstly , just to suicide as to put an end to everything … of cause not . the principle is to tackle with stress gentlely and harmoniously. we should try our best to release ourselves . such as to do some exercise , to linsen to traditional chinese music or classical music to ease our minds and to learn to view these changes of life as challenges .it’s no use crying over spilt milk . only to accept what has happened can solve the problem .

I’m grateful that I’ve been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past15years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.

Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past15years.

In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, Could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time. I started explaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn’t forgive myself. I simply couldn’t forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, Why didn’t you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn’t you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?

I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word responsibility and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.

Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.

New ideas, new information, new technologies. People can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is becoming more competitive.

&nds. Society is becoming ike individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.

Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about1million children in this country who can’t even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.

We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.

Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

Standing here now, I think of the past15years of my life as an ordinary student. Probably I’ll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But this doesn’t discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it’s going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.

Standing here now, I think of the past15years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. But that doesn’t discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

I can’t ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn’t had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.

It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.

We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen. today，we are gathering here to discuss a very hot issue. how to find harmony in a new age between man and nature? where modern science and technology are concerned i am only a layman i have to say. however, living in this “new age” , seeing my dear ones suffering from respiratory diseases from time to time, finding the beautiful colors of green and blue are being replaced by that of gray and pale, and realizing that our mother planet is getting more and more unhealthy; i can't help trying to offer my idea and my trivial efforts to look for the answer of the question.

As the ancient greek oracle goes: know thyself. i think in answering this above-mentioned question, this precondition is also very important.

Who are we? this is a question, which should be answered not only by those specialists, but also by every one of human beings.

Some people may proudly say: we are the masters of nature. it is true that the idea of “man can conquer nature” has dominated people's mind for years, and it is true, man has kept acting like a master and doing whatever things he wants for thousands of years. however, as the consequence of this kind of “leadership” , now the “master” seems to be confronted with problems that are far beyond his control. facts are really very ample. thegreen house effect leaves islands and cities along the coast, such as this oriental pearl-shanghai, in danger of the disaster of being drowned;the holes of the ozone layer make the earth less suitable to live for some creatures including human beings;the phenomena of el nino and la nina leave the land with serious flood and drought, and the diseases, caused by pollution,are increasing at an incredible speed... seeing all these facts, can we still ignore the counterattack of nature? we are not the masters of nature. facing all the disasters made by ourselves, we, mankind as a whole should realize that we are just a normal member of the big family of nature. any mistreatment towards nature will meet only with the revenge from her.

By saying so, i do not mean we should give a sudden stop to any development. because that will result in a threat to the existence of human society. i mean we should treat nature equally, leaving the chance of existence and development to nature as we are obtaining the same thing, and thus we will get the situation of win-win.

I am very pleased to find that now more and more people, from every corner of the planet, have come to realize that harmony with nature is the only way to universal and continuous progress and prosperity. and i think that is why we come here from all over the country to discuss this topic today.

2.In universities, students should take history courses no matter what field they study. Do you agree?

I disagree with it even though I do know history is important. I'm a student major in electricity. To be honest, I think there is little sense for students in university taking history courses no matter what field they study. Maybe many people would say, history is something left by our ancestors, so we shouldn't forget it. Yes, I agree with that. History need to be remembered. But in fact, we have been learning history from primary school. I really it's enough for people like me whose major has little relation to history. I just take history exam last year. For me, it was really a nightmare. I spent so much time on it and still can remember all. Now that we're chosen engineering, I can't understand why we need and have to learn history again. The time spent on history learning should be used for our major courses.

Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.

In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself. One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, “Could you please explain this to meI want very much to do better this time. ” I started explaining, and finished in a hurry.

Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, “Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for youWhy didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret”

I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word “responsibility” and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.

Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.

New ideas, new information, new technologies. People can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is becoming more competitive.

Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.

Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.

We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.

Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. Probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.

Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because we

know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.

It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.

We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

期末考试前一天，她来求我说“请你给我讲解一下行吗这次我很想考得好一点。”我开始给她讲解，不一会儿便草草收场，假装没有察觉她迷茫的眼神，一溜烟儿地跑开了。不出所料，这次她又考砸了。两个月后，新学期依始，传来她死于血癌的消息。我没有完成那项小小的任务，无人知晓。但我却不能原谅自己。她的眼睛令我难以忘怀，仿佛在责问我，“你为什么不愿多帮助我呢这对于你来说，并不费事。你为什么不能理解我对你的信赖，而让我带着痛苦和遗憾离开这个世界”

我当时才八九岁。但从某种意义上讲，这件事成了我生活的新起点。因为我开始体会到“责任”二字的意义，并尽心尽力地学着完成自己的义务。我也逐渐领会了这个神圣字眼的深刻内含:人与人之间的彼此需要和信任、合作和依赖正是人类社会存在的基础。

之后，我在生活中又经受过多次失败，但那小姑娘之死所引起的懊悔，心里却不曾再现。想到自己做每一件事都能尽职尽责，一种满足之感便油然而生。

此事及类似的多起事件改变了我，完善了我。当我长大成人，我开始领悟周围发生的一切变化。我发现，从某种意义上说，社会跟我一样，正处在一个自我完善的时期。新建筑、新商品、新款式一天一个样。新思维、新信息、新技术层出不穷。即便万里相隔，人们在转瞬之间即可相互交谈。社会竞争越演越烈。

人们越来越强调个性和创造性。越来越多的人因工作努力而受到奖赏。这就是当今的时代，一代新人由成长迈入成熟的时代。这是我们这一代人接替父辈治国安邦的时代。然而，我们也面临很多间题。

据悉，坏人在光天化日之下作恶，周围的群众居然袖手旁观，无动于衷。我还听说，目前我国尚有100万儿童连小学也上不起，而巨额资金却拿去举办奢侈的宴会和购置豪华的轿车。

我们常常买的是劣质药品，或名曰药品实为一文不值的废物，非但不能除病去痛，反而会使

病情加重。在某些人看来，世上金钱最宝贵，只要能赚钱，不惜牺牲道德和责任。

因而，这个时代赋予我们的是更强烈的竞争和效率意识，使我们更善于批判性地思考和创造性地行动。

此外，这个时代要求我们这一代人必须认清自己肩负的历史重任，下定决心，采取行动，解决上述问题。长期以来，历史一直在我们这一代人身上培养着这些品质。现在，历史呼唤我们挺身而出，以实际行动向全民族及全人类证实我们的拳拳爱国之心和大无畏的英雄主义。

此刻，我站在讲台上回顾15年来的学生生活。今后的岁月，我很可能平平淡淡地度过。但这丝毫不会让我心灰意冷。因为我知道，凭借强烈的责任感和精益求精的不懈奋斗，我将追求一种有意义的生活，一种不枉此生的生活。

Knowing the Consequences of Choice

Over the past Spring Festival, I got involved in a family dispute. Right before I got home, four satellite channels of CCTV were added to the 14 channels we had already had. In prime time at night, they all had interesting shows. Therefore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and I-had to argue over what to watch. Finally, we agreed that we should watch the “most interesting” programme... If we

could agree what that was.

However, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had TV, there were only one or two channels available. The increase in options reveals an important change in our life: the abundance of choice.

Fifteen years ago we all dressed in one style and in one colour. Today, we select from a wide variety of designs and shades.

Fifteen years ago, we read few newspapers. Today, we read English newspapers like the China Daily and the 21st Century, as well as various Chinese newspapers.

Fifteen years ago, English majors took only courses in language and literature. Today, we also study Western culture, journalism, business communications, international relations, and computer science.

The emergence of choices marks the beginning of a new era in China's history; an era of diversity, of material and cultural richness, and an era of the rebirth of the Chinese nation.

i remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when i helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death. i thought about them on the plane returning to california from the midwestern town where my sisters family lives. i thought about all the things that she hadnt seen or heard or done. i thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.

im still thinking about his words, and theyve changed the weeds in the garden. im spending more time with my family and friends and letime in committee meetings. whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savour, not endure. im trying to recognize these moment now and cherish them.

im not saving anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special. event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom… i wear my good blazer to the market if i feel like it. my theory is if i look prosperous, i can shell out $28. 49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing. im not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party going friends.

someday and one of these days are losing their grip on my vocabulary. if its worth seeing or hearing or doing, i want to see and hear and do it now. im not sure what my sister wouldve done had she know that she wouldnt be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted.

i think she would have called family members and a few close friends. she might have called a few former friends to apologize, and mend fences for past squabbles. i like to think she would have gone out for a chinese dinner, her favorite food. im guessing. ill never know.

its those little things left undone that would make me angry if i knew that my hours were limited. angry because i put off seeing good friends whom i was going to get in touch with someday. angry because i hadnt written certain letters that i intended to write one of these days. angry and sorry that i didnt tell my husband and daughter often enough how much i truly love them.

im trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. and every morning when i open my eyes, i tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath truly, is... a gift from god.

She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful

creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.

Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most

promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.

All these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the

realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources.

Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our

I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer.

And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Dian Fossey be- cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our

ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.

And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great

opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes arent natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.

All these appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding(侵蚀) our resources. Encouragingly, the e__plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the worlds attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

You were brought here by the so-called Pilgrims, or Founding Fathers. They were the ones who brought you here.

We have a common enemy. We have this in common: We have a common oppressor, a common exploiter, and a common discriminator. But once we all realize that we have this common enemy, then we unite on the basis of what we have in common. And what we have foremost in common is that enemy -- the white man. He's an enemy to all of us. I know some of you all think that some of them aren't enemies. Time will tell.

In Bandung back in, I think, 1954, was the first unity meeting in centuries of black people. And once you study what happened at the Bandung conference, and the results of the Bandung conference, it actually serves as a model for the same procedure you and I can use to get our problems solved. At Bandung all the nations came together. Their were dark nations from Africa and Asia. Some of them were Buddhists. Some of them were Muslim. Some of them were Christians. Some of them were Confucianists; some were atheists. Despite their religious differences, they came together. Some were communists; some were socialists; some were capitalists. Despite their economic and political differences, they came together. All of them were black, brown, red, or yellow.

The number-one thing that was not allowed to attend the Bandung conference was the white man. He couldn't come. Once they excluded the white man, they found that they could get together. Once they kept him out, everybody else fell right in and fell in line. This is the thing that you and I have to understand. And these people who came together didn't have nuclear weapons; they didn't have jet planes; they didn't have all of the heavy armaments that the white man has. But they had unity.
