Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens‟, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century.
The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.
The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.
How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don‟t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.
For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, „The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose‟, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.
To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people‟s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their „kindness‟, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.
Francis Bacon said in his essay, „Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.‟

The novel starts with an air crash. A group of boys from Britain are casted in a deserted island. All of them are under 13. In the beginning, Ralph, whose father is a naval officer, meets with a fat little boy, who has a nickname Piggy. They explore the island to find other survivors. And they find a conch shell on the beach. Ralph learns to blow on it. The other boys gather to the beach when they hear the conch. Among them there are choirboys led by Jack. They organize a meeting and make Ralph their chief. Ralph says one must hold this shell couch if he want to say something in the meeting. Jack is still in charge of the choir and he says they will be hunters. They make fire as a signal for rescue with Piggy‟s eyeglasses and erect two tents. Everyone has his work: gathering fruits and water, hunting and watching the fire.
The hunters go into the forest and find a wild pig. They fail to catch it but Jack learns how to hunt through this experience. The two choirboys, who are
supposed to keep the fire going, go and help Jack in hunting. Just then, a ship passes. Ralph notices that the fire has burned out. He is very angry about this. Piggy criticizes them, who just return with their first prey. During a meeting, a boy says he hears the sound of a beast, which lead to a great fear between them. Ralph and Jack go to search the “beast” but find a corpse. Jack tells others that the beast exists, which divides them into two groups, one of which is led by Ralph and the other by Jack. Jack assembles his tribe and hunt wild animals. They have their faces painted. Ralph‟s group continues to keep the fire for rescue and try to follow democracy they had create..

Ralph keeps running in the forest and at last comes to beach. The hunters are pursuing him and firing the tent with Piggy‟s glasses. A ship nearby notices the fire on the beach and land on the island. Ralph is aware of the rescue. But he does not simile. He cries.

He went to London and stayed there for some time. Then he went to sea for the second time. But it was terrible. A pirate ship came after them. A long hard fight later, they and the ship were the pirates’ prisoners. Two years later, he got free from his master.After long time, he went to Brazil and worked hard for some years, so he became rich. But he went to sea again in 1659.The ship was broken by the sea. The sea carried him to an island. Then he began his new life on the island on September30, 1969, and lived on the island for twenty-seven years, two months and nineteen days. In the twenty-seven years, he and the man Friday lived together happily for some years. At the end of the story, he said goodbye to his island and sailed home to England.
I think Robinson was good in some ways, although sometimes he was stupid. He likes adventures, although they are really dangerous. He likes help others. In the story, he helped Friday, Friday’s father, a Spanish, a captain and the captain’s first and second officers. He is a very kind man. I really want to be a great people like Robinson. Because I hope people think I’m a nice student.
So how am I going to do that? First of all, I’m going to study all my subjects very hard. Teachers will think me is a good students. At the second, I want to have more friends. I hope I usually help my classmates or my friends in the future. I need to be friendly to others.
Now I am a class monitor, I don’t know what I am going to do in the future. But I hope I can be a doctor. I think doctor is a great job, although doctors usually feel very tired. The main character in the book, Makutsi was always feared about her boyfriend misunderstood about her so-called feminism. And she tries to predict how her marriage will be changed by the fortune. In order to test her boyfriend, she obedient to her mind to pay for a pair of new impractical blue shoes, even though it does not looks very well.
Polopetsi is the new employee in the detective agency. He is a good working person, but he has the superstitious mind. He fears he lost his boss’s trust. But when his boss showed faith to him, he relaxed and felt happy again.
In conclusion, this book’s title is unique. It concludes the main idea and the big events of the story. The author putted the main idea ‘happiness’ in the cover of the book. So everyone who begins to read this book will find easily, that this book is going to tell a positive story.I don’t think I can create a better title of this book. So I believe this title is effective.
