Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

A rapid means of long-distance transportation became a necessity for the United States as settlement spread ever farther westward. The early trains were impractical curiosities, and for a long time the railroad companies met with troublesome mechanical problems. The most serious ones were the construction of rails able to bear the load, and the development of a safe, effective stopping system. Once these were solved, the railroad was established as the best means of land transportation. By 1860 there were thousands of miles of railroads crossing the eastern mountain ranges and reaching westward to the Mississippi. There were also regional southern and western lines.

The high point in railroad building came with the construction of the first transcontinental system. In 1862 Congress authorized two western railroad companies to build lines from Nebraska westward and from California eastward to a meeting point, so as to complete a transcontinental crossing linking the Atlantic seaboard with the Pacific. The Government helped the railroads generously with money and land. Actual work on this project began four years later. The Central Pacific Company, starting from California, used Chinese labor, while the Union Pacific employed crews of Irish laborers. The two groups worked at remarkable speed, each trying to cover a greater distance than the other. In 1869 they met at a place called Promontory in what is now the state of Utah. Many visitors came there for the great occasion. There were joyous celebrations all over the country, with parades and the ringing of church bells to honor the great achievement.

Excessive Packaging

In this highly commercialized society, the merchants have been making all the effects to add to the attraction of their products. The phenomenon is extremely prevalent that the packages themselves cost much more than the goods in them. Therefore, consumers in growing numbers express serious concerns over this problem.

There are several factors that can account for this phenomenon. To begin with, numerous people buy the goods in attractive packages as gifts for their friends, parents, and leaders. In this case, extravagant packages can assist them to demonstrate their care, respect, and loyalty. Moreover, the market has been saturated with homogeneous products. In order to differentiate their products from those of others quickly and directly, the manufacturers are more than willing to invest in the packaging. Additionally, the sellers may employ the vivid and exquisite packages as the tactic to appeal to their consumers, who focus no attention on the prices but the psychological satisfaction from the admirable looks from their friends, even the passers-by, when they walk on the street with an eye-catching and flamboyant packages in their hands.

范文:

Online Games

As a product of modern computer and theInternet, online games have become very popular among college students. A great manystudents have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self-discipline are too much indulged in these games so that their healthand academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry fromthe teachers and parents.

However, some others argue that online games are not always harmful. They can train theability of youngsters to respond to things quickly. Moreover, they can stimulate theirimagination and their interest in computer science. More importantly, it does bring collegestudents much pleasure and release their pressure greatly.

From my point of view, online games are a wonderful entertainment if you play them in areasonable way. When they interfere too much with your study, it is better for you to givethem up at once. Yet if you have enough self-control over them, you can certainly obtain realpleasure and benefit a lot from them.

Importance of Education

China, as a developing country, is determinedto catch up with and even surpass the developedones. I think that one of the best possible ways todo so is to give first priority(优先)to thedevelopment of culture, science and especiallyeducation.

In modern times, when science and technologyare making great progress, the education of thework force is of primary importance. Moreover, many of the success in advanced countries havedemonstrated that a nation 's prosperity mainly depends on the quality of its labour force, namely those who have been well educated.

In a developing country such as China, our investment in culture, education and science, and especially elementary education, must enjoy top priority. This is crucial(决定性的)forChina to catch up with the developed nations in today's surging(汹涌的) waves of technologicalrevolution. Otherwise, the gap between China and advanced countries will be widened ratherthan bridged.

step away from the video games

every afternoon hundreds of thousands of youths flood internet cafes, switch on a game console, or otherwise sit down to involve themselves in intense fantasy worlds. i'm talking about video games; games like counter strike, diablo, smash brothers or halo. these games can be fun and exciting, but we need to watch out for when this pastime becomes an addiction.

games are often incredibly exciting and dramatic, but they generally aren't very intellectual. we don't learn as much from them as we would simply reading a book, and spending too much time playing them can take away from our study time. we need to remember that we are students first and foremost. nothing should ever get in the way of proper studying.

video games can also be a bad influence on younger children who may be watching. many video games are violent and the object in most of them is to kill the other player(s). this does not send the right message to the children who need to be told that violence is not acceptable and need to be taught how to handle situations maturely. even if we do decide ourselves to sit down and play a violent video game, we need to make sure that it is not influencing the younger people around

us.

net economy

people are talking about the “new economy” it's very they see people face-to-face at their

job or in stores. people get information from newspapers, radios, televisions, reference books and the library.

in the new economy, people do business through the “net”, which is a connection of millions of computers everywhere in the world. in the new economy, workers often work at home. they can get information on-line. they can communicate with employers and co-workers by e-mail. customers

shop on-line. businesses have “virtual stores”. they are websites on which customers can see the products. businesses can sell to customers anywhere in the world.

in the new economy, people live a fast paced, convenient and colorful life. the whole world develops more rapidly than before. but the new economy is a double-edged sword.its disadvantage is also obvious. for example, the internet has led to a huge increase in credit-card cheating. some illegal websites offer some cheap or banned goods or services.on-line shoppers who enter their credit-card information may never receive the goods they want to buy and their card informarion could even be for sale on an illegal website. so peopie in the new economy should be more smart and knowledgeable.

In the era of information and technology, there are all kinds of recreational activities. Some people think those recreational activities are great and necessary, because they can help people relax from the hard work and study. Some of the activities, such as hiking, jogging, can help people relax physically; while some of them, such as surfing the Internet, can help people relax mentally.

However, some people think that so many kinds of recreational activities may have a bad effect on our lives. Some people may not resist some temptations from those activities, and indulge themselves in those activities. At last they are lured away from their study or their work.

In my opinion, we should pay more attention to the advantages of various recreational activities and make the most of them. Meanwhile, we should learn how to use those activities positively, and make them a helpful tool for our development.
